Artificial Intelligence (AI)  and the Academic Integrity Policy

What is Artificial Intelligence (A.I)?

Artificial Intelligence (A.I) is defined as conceptualising computational systems to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence such as learning and problem-solving. The Use of A.I within the context of university is both scary and quite fascinating to say the least. A.I disproportionately impacts post secondary students who are members of Generation Z. Consequently, A.I Is an entirely new phenomenon that produces various implications for Carleton University's Academic integrity policy. Not only does A.I result in various implications on Carleton’s Academic integrity policy but it also complicates the relationship between the course instructor and students registered in the course.

Fact #1

If your course instructor suspects that you are using A.I to violate Carleton University’s Academic Integrity policy, that course instructor is not authorized to use A.I detector programming to determine whether or not a student is using A.I to violate the policy.  If a course instructor suspects that a student is using A.I to cheat, that course instructor must contact the faculty Dean.

A course outline operates as a contractual agreement between the course instructor and the student registered in the course. The extent to which a course instructor authorizes the use of AI must be clearly communicated in the course outline to reduce confusion from varying instructors. This informational website: A.ITransparencyatcarleton.ca is designed to build A.I transparency at Carleton University. Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) at Carleton University has created a basic formula for instructors to create a syllabus statement. For example, TLS created a website designed to assist instructors in creating syllabus statements for AI use in classrooms.
