Definitions 

 

Appeal: process by which students may appeal a decision of the Academic Integrity Policy 

Allegation: refers to information sent to the Dean by a course instructor relating to their concern that a student may have violated the policy 

Committee: refers to the Senate Student Academic Integrity Appeals Committee  

Dean: refers to the chief academic and administrative of a Faculty or an Associate Dean or Director of the faculty who has been tasked to manage academic misconduct.  

Disciplinary record: Retained by the university in respect of a student who has violated the Policy. Note: A disciplinary record is kept confidential.  

Evidentiary Records: consequently records that are created as a result of an allegation 

Examination: tests, quizzes, mid-term, final and deferred examinations 

Expulsion from the university: the permanent termination of all a student’s rights and privileges as a student at the university

Faculty: A major teaching division of the University divided into departments and schools managed by a Dean  

Instructor: any individual employed by the University to teach 

 Meeting: scheduled discussion in person or through electronic communications 

 Misconduct: actions by a student that constitute a violation of the academic integrity standards

Notation: a formal record of a finding of academic misconduct, such as plagiarism or cheating, placed on a student's university record or transcript

Ombuds Services: provides advice and guidance on matters of procedure related to the policy 

Policy: The Academic Integrity Policy of Carleton University 

Provost: The Provost represents Carleton academics externally

Senate Executive: a standing committee of the Senate appointed by the Senate. 

The Senate Student Academic Integrity Appeals Committee is a Standing Committee appointed by the Senate.  

Student: any person who at the time of the alleged violation of the policy 

Suspension: is a sanction under this policy that removes a student’s right to register in any courses or to be awarded a degree, diploma, or certificate for a specified period  

University Registrar's Office: the office that provides procedural advice to instructors, students, faculties and university administrators
